Actions and reactions from 5 different countries: 5 creative activist concerned groups came together to bring street actions to street of our towns (Riedau, Austria; Prague, CR; Berlin, Germany; Athens, Greece; Tenerife, Spain, in order to raise awareness, animate our communities and bring good news into our living spaces.

Kulturlabor Trial&Error as a part of stream for change realized many actions and activities supported by the stream for change network. Now you can read and see what happened the past months.

******
Colorize the city
with moss graffiti

It is said that moss absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide; to benefit from this we would have to cover all of berlin to start purifying the air a little. We started with some ugly wall to hopefully makes someone else’s day a little better. You can find information online about how to make moss graffiti. We decided for a mixture with some fresh picked moss, buttermilk and sugar. Read more in the original post!

******
Herb plant give away
with seed bombs and urban trash mobilee

The idea of this action is to promote people growing their own food and to understand plants. Seedbombs are designed to enable seeds to be sown in a hard to reach place. Perfect tool to go wild with flowers and reclaim your nature! Our invention of urban trash mobile is one of the most beautiful way to promote herbs growing in ones kitchen.

******
Critical mass
with Critical Masks
Join your local critical mass and help animate it with costumes or noisy objects and musical instruments. With our handmade beautiful anti pollution masks we want to show that cycling is not only more fun but also healthier.

******
Ecological footprint
a dumpster diving comparison
We found it very interesting to see how our ecological footprint is actually influenced by dumpster diving. We collected data of our food consumption and data of our dumpster diving action. Analysis is coming soon.

******
Lifestyle choices
Our choice swap your clothes!

There are so many clothes on this world created through exploration and under inhuman conditions. We decided to not be part of this any longer but the show alternatives and thus we opened our own swapshop! Here we exchange clothes and shoes and lern how to create our own.

******
Open green tours
aka trash awareness walk

A real alternative to classic tours is the trash awareness walk. Not only realizing our own ecological footprint but also realizing the trash in our environment and figuring out how to prevent public pollution problems.

******
Local Healthy food
in shape of vegan cakes

With really delicious vegan cakes, supported by local farmers carrots, apples and berries we invited to pure treat and pleasure. Starting with a communal vegan cake baking and the sharing of the recipes, we introducing some first time baker into its philosophy.

******
A week without Plastic
- a closer examination of the plastic bottle

We realized that not touching plastic for one week is a too big task for us, but not knowing why plastic is actually so evil we decided to have closer at it: the plastic bottle. After experimenting with the material, Jorge, our in-house chemist introduced everyone to the world of plastic. Lesson learned: if there is one way, it’s try to avoid plastic. Check out this post to know more!

******
Outdoor upcycling
– the Recycled Creativity Festival

We invited to a 10-days festival of outdoor upcycling activities to promote the concept of recycle, reuse and reduce and to have fun with trash! Check it out and come by next year.
******
Independent week
- the Schrottregatta

Have u ever built your own trashboat? Did u ever see people floating on lots of trash, reusing flyer stand as an engine, frying pans as paddle and wheel chairs as seats including driving wheels? No? Well it is a lot of fun as you can see!

There’s a shortage of such good news, so why don’t we make some up and show them to public, to sparkle some collective wishful thinking - who knows the limits of such positive wishing?

At the end of October, the Prague group has invited the inhabitants of Prague, to create their own, made-up good news, and the mix of news in Czech and English was produced and subsequently shown on the street and subject to collective good wishing and positive thinking - who know, maybe all those good thoughts would bring a push and contribute to a revolution?
The Schrottregatta - what a crazy independent week
in Cooperation with Recycled Creativity, Stream for change, Bootschaft and the whole Funkhaus Grünau Crew.

Crazy Trashboat, funky wheelchair platforms, brilliant light taped folderboats, elaborate palettefloats, swimming ketchup and mayonaise buckets versus sinking desks and sweept off giant colored balls - a short summary of the first schrottregatta 2012. At least 12 Teams where building boats during a whole week at funkhaus grünau.
During the week the participants could use the open workshops, lern how to work with wood, fabric, metall and use the gamout of materials to be found at the funkhaus. At the big Schrottregatta day the community, neighbors, friends, makers, watersport friends, environmentalists and everybody who found his way on that stormy day to grünau, was invited to see the crazy trash boat race, listen to different concerts and shows, join the variety of upcycling workshops, lern about cradle to cradle processes, see dazzling artwork and circus shows, marvel at the pedal powered music stage, dance in undescribable dancefloors and enjoy amazing funkhaus atmosphere in nature.

See yourself what one can do when using trash as a material, having a place to create and build and being surrounded by like-minded competition :)

In a time when the Greek government is contemplating water privitazation contributing to this valuable resources’s protection and saving is more crucial than ever!

Passers-by were asked to express their concerns and share their ideas by writing their message on a water drop! Many of these were collected in order to create a unified message that will be distributed via numerous online resources!

Zazit Mesto Jinak - Experience City Differently - was a festival that encouraged people to get out into the streets of their neighbourhoods, spent time with their neighbours, learn something new or share what they know and have. All day long people were dancing on the streets, taking part in workshops, picnicking and experiencing completely different connection with their communities.

Prague’s Stream for Change group used the occasion to promote a thing we find especially important, especially now with winter on the horizon: using local and seasonal products, like fruits and veggies, rather than imported ones.

The group prepared industrial quantities of delicious, healthy sweets from 100% Czech apples: a mousse, apple crisps, and a large tray of an apple pie. Everybody, who wanted to receive a piece, had to got through a test where they had to answer various questions, in the process finding out about benefits of buying local products, or, if we go for imported ones - of buying fairtrade. the response was very positive and everyone who tasted our sweets, solemnly declared to only eat Czech pears and apples, until natural strawberries don’t show up next year!

At the end of August 2012, the Prague Stream for Change group...

At the end of August 2012, the Prague Stream for Change group has organized an open Green Tour for foreigners visiting Prague. We took a stroll around Holesovice, a district which normally not frequented by tourists. Originally industrial, and slightly run-down, in recent years it has been an arena of dynamic development and is hosting many interesting social, environmental and cultural initiatives. here are some highlights of the tour:

1) PRAZELENINA - an open space for communal urban gardening. It’s founder, Matej Petranek answered our question about calm and green space located on the crossroads of several busy street.

As an architect, he is interested in planning the urban areas in innovative ways, that truly serve its inhabitants. After finding this rundown space, which main purpose was scaring people and causing safety hazard to local children, he decide to open a communal garden.

Now, every neighbour can rent a bag with earth and together, they are growing organic, delicious veggies and fruit. As Matej told us, he thought the space will be used for growing food. instead, as it turned out, the space is used for growing community and human relationships.

The are also has a small bar with refreshments, a sandbox for children and a stage where local theatres and groups can perform.

2) DOX - centre for contemporary art

The participant of our tour were invited to the centre of contemporary art which brings to Prague a lot of world-class contemporary art. The item we were most interested in was the Jesus Christ sculpture made from… shoes - the ultimate example of upcycling in art. Do you know other artist that use trash as a material for their art?

3) CROSS CLUB - and yet again, upcycling is on the stage. Cross club can serve as one of the ultimate upcycling examples: it’s exterior and interior was built (and still is), throughout many years with wires, poles, screws, lamps, cables, bus seats, etc etc collected in landfills and given new life and use. What is most interesting, that at night, when the place gets alive, the post-industrial structure serve not only as a static decoration: they are actually converted into small, movable robots for an even better upcycled party experience!

There was no way we could possibly squeeze all the amazing green initiatives that are going on in Prague in a 1.5 hour tour, so we presented them on virtual stations while strolling the streets of Holesovice. these included forest-kindergartens, “don’t throw me away” good exchange website nevyhazujto, a green map of prague, a cinema where you can come with a dog and many others. feel free to contact us if you visit Prague for more green-touring tips!

DIY OR DIE
The Stream for Change group has been invited to join...

DIY OR DIE

The Stream for Change group has been invited to join a D.I.Y. festival of Prague’s cultural magazine A Dvojka, where they organized an upcycling workshop with a theme just right at the brink of autumn: how to make a bird feeder from used plastic plates and plastic bottles.

All you need is some trash, a glue gun, scissors, garden wire and something to decorate the feeder (and of course the seeds for the birds):

You can use a used plastic bottle to make a bird feeder during the holidays. Various type of birds will attracted. At the same time, you can use your camera to snap photos of them. Then, you can upload the photos to any social network such as Facebook and get likes from your friends.

Steps:

1) Prepare a plastic bottle, a plastic plate, hot glue, string or wire, scissors, knife and wild bird seeds.

2) Remove any label from the plastic bottle and clean it with soap and warm water. Then, cut the bottom half of the bottle off using a sharp knife.

3) Cut a small dome shaped area from the bottom of the cut bottle. This will be the opening where the bird seed comes out.

4) Get your plastic plate ready and using the hot glue gun. Run a line of glue around the bottom of the bottle but do not glue the dome shaped section.

5) Firmly affix the bottle to the ‘eating surface’ of the plate, directly in the middle. Hold the bottle down for a few minutes to ensure that the glue is dried.

6) Poke 2 holes carefully through the top of the 2 liter bottle using the scissors. Then, thread your wire or string through the holes and tie it.

7) Fill the bottle with the seeds.

8) Hang your bird feeder on the tree branch, window sill or wherever you feel like, really.

After some trials and errors we recommend using natural elements (leaves, needles…) to decorate the bottles and… encourage the birds :)

Photo

On Saturday September 29th 2012 a group of people comprised of...

On Saturday September 29th 2012 a group of people comprised of mostly from students, participated in an upcycling workshop held by the MEDITERRANEAN SOS Network and yiuco.com in the Pedion tou Areos Park in central Athens!

Everyone who participated brought with them an old t-shirt, a can from a soft drink, a plactic shampoo bottle and also a plastic soft drink or water bottle. Through the upcylcing process these items where transformed into pretty and useful things such as a nenklace, an ashtray, a mobile phone holder and many more things! The value of reuse was promoted through this process and at the same time everyone left having “new” items that they could use or give out as gifts!

fruit lemonade on the countryside

pressing organic apples with the power of sun to a fantastic juice. And thats for free – people where surprised and the conversation about stream for change started!

Last friday the 28th of september it was time for the action “fruit lemonade” to be held on the austrian countryside at an local farmer market. In the morning we collected apples from local trees and a few days before we started to charge our battery with solar power for the mixer.

In the afternoon we went to the market and started pressing organic applejuice. Firstly for the farmers which were selling their products and then for all visitors. Conversations about Stream for Change were held and a good environment established.

In total 40 glasses of juice, 20 kg of apples and 200Wh Electricity were used for this tasty action ;-)

Photo

We are going to give out some 100% Czech ingredients apple pie...

We are going to give out some 100% Czech ingredients apple pie and have games about awesomeness and importance of consuming local and seasonal products, tomorrow in Prague, Krymska, from around 14-15, as part of Zazit Mesto Jinak festival, come join us, play some apple games (and we don’t mean on macs and iphones) and get free cake!

Welcome to the Recycled Creativity Festival

We are organising a big festival with creative workshops, films, discussions and music in the name of Stream for change. We will realize almost all the actions in this big festival in order to reach most people! What can be done if we all come together? Remains of plastic, electronics and paper will be transformed through creative ideas into new useful, funny or simply beautiful items. But recycling also works just as well with music and film material. For this festival artists, volunteers and young people from diverse ethnical and social backgrounds realize the festival with their own interpretations of recycling. We will kick off with the big recycling, upcycling and repairing day at the Wagenburg Lohmühle on the 15th of September, including a big Vokü with regional and local food and have experimental days, whereby we will build a big Trashsculputure at the UFA-Fabrik and then with a not to be missed crtical mass style bike-tram move the entire festival over to Funkhaus Grünau where the lifestylechoices Schrottboats are built for the big regatta! Also there will be Workshops about cradle-to-cradle to lern how to ife and produce in a more sustainable way!

Come and check it out if you are in Berlin for these dates: 15-22nd of September! *****www.recycledcreativity.info*****

In our last initiative within Stream for Change project, we have made the so-called ‘Positives News Publication’ where we wanted to show to people of Tenerife the possibility to do things to change. Many different countries, with different languages and cultures, can join with the same goal, to show how improve our life, our world and our society.

The Canary group of Stream for Change, from Isla CreActiva’s association, have created a triptych in which we explained and showed the idea of a European Voluntary and the development of an idea made at same time in five different countries.

In the triptych we attached pictures in brochures and explanations of the initiatives that have been taking place, not only in Tenerife but also in the other countries.

A Saturday afternoon in the city of La Laguna, where people were more receptive in the absence of daily work, dedicating their free time to walk and enjoy the city, we explained to them the initiatives and the work we have been doing. Many of them were interested in the project, some for the website, the blog, and many of them also by the Youth in Action Program. We share the triptych with them.

So what better positive news than the intense and interesting project done!

Our good news could be summarized in the good resolution of the project, participation in each initiative and the great success of this day of ‘Positive News’ among the inhabitants of the city of La Laguna.

The Oceans: Municipal landfills:

Recycling Initiative.

Each year a total of 6.4 million tonnes of waste reach our oceans, of which between 60% and 80% is plastic. The largest percentage is plastic bags, but beverage containers, cans or butts involve nearly half the total. These data were provided in a report by Greenpeace in 2008. And although the disposal of waste and garbage into the sea is a prohibited activity since 1972, the problem grows exponentially each year.

For Achim Steiner, former director of UNEP, UN program for the environment: “The garbage in the sea is the symptom of a serious disease: the constant misuse and mismanagement of natural resources,” He adds that “the amount of plastic bags, bottles and other debris in the ocean can be drastically reduced by improving the management of waste, recycling and reducing their number”

According to a Greenpeace report entitled “Garbage at sea” only 15% of the rubbish that ends up in the sea poured beaches. Sinks 70% and the other 15% remains in the water column. Data reflecting the large amount of waste in our seas is out of sight of all and is capable of causing serious environmental damage.

The dumping of industrial or agricultural wastes as nitrogen fertilizers causes ocean acidification and increased dead zones. In them, the lack of oxygen means the disappearance of living beings. On the other hand, marine animals are incapable of recognizing human waste and the swallow, ingestion of these wastes can block the digestive tract and prevent animals from feeding properly even cause death. Millions of plastic bags are left on the coast and the wind and the tides are responsible for dragging the sea, where they remain for decades without fading, animals such as sea turtles and dolphins, mistake them for jellyfish and eat them drowning in the attempt by swallowing. Even a UNEP report indicates that this marine debris gradually fragmented into ever smaller pieces that can be consumed by living base of the food chain. In addition, this pollution kills each year more than one million birds and one hundred thousand marine mammals.

Under the “Stream for Change” project, a transnational youth initiative made possible through the collaboration of the European Youth in Action Programme, we have decided to realize this fact. To do this, along with other young people living on the island, we made a beach cleaning, Masca’s beach, in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte. We collected waste like: shoes, tires, plastic bags, cans, cigarette butts, plastic containers, etc… After that, we make the logo of our project “Stream for Change”.

In the Open Green Initiative Tour on 09/08/2012, we descended the Masca’s ravine. Both, participants of the initiative and volunteers did the beach clean at the end of the Tour. Apparently, the beach was clean, but when we started walking among the rocks, we found pretty rubbish. Finally, we collected 9 bags of trash. After making the Stream for Change logo, at around 18:30 pm, Manolo and Juan from Borealsub came by ship to pick us and take us to Puerto Santiago. We ordered some drinks and let us admire the cliffs. Once in port, we separate the garbage in the appropriate recycling bins, ending an strenuous day!

Open Green Tour.- MASCA.

In Tenerife there are 42 Nature Reserves and a National Park, which are the 48’6% of the land in an area of 2034’38 square kilometres. Because of the need to preserve these areas that are grouped diverse endemic plant and animal species, we decided to make the Open Green Tour on the Barranco de Masca.

On 09/08/2012, participants of Stream for Change project, with a group of young people were date to learn more about their island’s natural areas. We came together at 07:00 am at the Plaza del Adelantado, La Laguna, and then divide up into three cars. The journey was long but worth it. At 10:30 a.m., we, the eleven young arrived to Masca. Seven of the youth had never made the descent of the gorge. We drank a coffee, and at eleven we started the tour.

Upon arrival, we saw the Masca’s walls flanking the village; at the west we saw the sea. From here we could see the Masca’s fortress on our right, the fort is an spectacular cliff located between Masca ravine and the confluence of other two ravines.

Enrique, opened the tour, giving us some details of the area, such that:

• The village of Masca has 161 inhabitants.

• Masca forms part with its rich landscape to the Teno Rural Park.

• The Teno massif, with an approximate age of between 5 and 7 million years, is one corner that led to the birth of the island. In some places reaches 600m.

• Due to the isolation of Masca, community maintained traditional cultural expressions, as its architecture.

And finally, he said that at the end of the tour, we could see the cliffs of Los Gigantes (Giants), formed by the action of the sea several hundred meters, where seabirds nest.

Then, going down a bit, we took the group photo. Adriana talked to us about the history of the area:

• Before the arrival of the road, Masca had about 59 houses, in which lived some 187 inhabitants in 1970. The original track was made by neighbours with bolivars that migrants were sent to Venezuela.

• Due to the reliance on a self-sufficient economy, most young people left the village, leaving only the elderly.

• The aborigines pastoral practice was very intense. Guanches were nomadic with seasonal use of bed of the ravine slopes and peaks and had burial caves. As aboriginal element, there is a sanctuary nearby to Masca, in Tarucho’s rock has been found archaeological material, even engravings. From Tarucho’s rock you can see the islands of La Gomera and La Palma. The elevated location allowed distinguishing the beginning of the seasons.

Descending, the youth group could recognize Canary palms (Phoenix canariensis) and white broom (Retama raetam). In some palms we noticed black color of its trunk, which is due to the fire of 2007. From the trailhead we could observe both, exotic and endemic flora along the way. We could find bejeques and verodes as: (Aeonium mascaense) which is endangered. Along the way they can be counted many canaries, Tenerife and even local endemisms.

Approaching the runway, we found an informative poster that recommended not to feed feral cats. This warning echoes the threat of feral cats on wildlife, especially alligators. Due to the rugged terrain of the place, until fairly recent times, the Teno massif has served as a refuge where extinct species survive elsewhere, as the Tenerife Speckled Lizard (Gallotia intermedia) having several towns on the cliffs of Los Gigantes and can measure up to 50cm. The fauna is characterized by its relative isolation in the cliffs and seabirds abound, like, Cory’s shearwater, the yellow-legged gull and osprey Guincho.

After half an hour of downhill and across a wooden bridge, the trail runs along the bed of the ravine with a natural stream. We were impressed with the verticality of the walls that make up the ravine. After three hours, at 14:30, and 4.5 km long, the channel opens to oceanfront finish on a black sand and rock beach. The cliffs of Los Carneros left falls on the sea forming a black sandy cove. On the right we find a cement walkway ending in a tiny jetty where at 18:30, Manolo from Borealsub association picked us in his boat, leading to Puerto Santiago.

In Masca beach we enjoyed a deserved rest, soaking our tired legs in the cold, clear waters of the beach. We ate while enjoying the view of the island of La Gomera in front of us.

We also took the day for the initiative, Recycling, doing a beach cleanup. With the garbage collection we created the Stream for Change logo on sand. And after the way back by boat to Puerto Santiago, we placed the waste in its corresponding waste recycling container.

During the back we enjoyed the views of the cliffs from the sea and finally started back home.

For participants the experience was very positive. They were able to better understand the natural values of their island and realize you can do many activities outside home in an eco-friendly way. Seven of the eleven participants had never made the descent of Masca Canyon, which however, is visited by more than 500,000 foreign visitors each year.

Although this action has happened in April, over the months it...

Foto: Frantisek Vlcek, Lidove Noviny, http://relax.lidovky.cz/foto.asp?c=A120419_201918_ln-zajimavosti_Pta&r=ln-zajimavosti&strana=2

Foto: Frantisek Vlcek, Lidove Noviny, http://relax.lidovky.cz/foto.asp?c=A120419Foto: Frantisek Vlcek, Lidove Noviny, http://relax.lidovky.cz/foto.asp?c=A120419

Foto: Frantisek Vlcek, Lidove Noviny, http://relax.lidovky.cz/foto.asp?c=A120419

Foto: Frantisek Vlcek, Lidove Noviny, http://relax.lidovky.cz/foto.asp?c=A120419

Although this action has happened in April, over the months it has sadly not lost on its actuality. The Prague Members of Stream for Change decided to join the Prague Criticall Mass Ride organized regularly by Auto*Mat NGO that fights for rights of cyclists and pedestrians in Prague.

Stream for Changers’ special addition was to wear colorful clothes and balaklavas in order to protest against the imprisonment of the activist from Russian feminist punk group, Pussy Riot.

The 4 months have passed, and although the case have gained massive visibility in the media and led to many protests and petitions all over the world, the artists have been sentenced for two years of labour camp.

Russian officials seem to be immune to and perfectly capable of ignoring the voices of protest coming from all over the world. An effective solution to at least somehow affect them, may be petitioning to the EU officials, in order for them to issue economic and political sanctions against Russia.

You can fill in the petition and support the cause here: http://www.avaaz.org/en/free_pussy_riot_free_russia_a/?bBiULab&v=17285

It is said that moss absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide; to...

It is said that moss absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide; to benefit from this effect, in the streets of Neukölln, Berlin, we would have to cover the whole walls to start purifying the air a little. Our limited resources reminded us that it’s better to start somewhere and we decided to stick some moss decoration on some ugly wall to hopefully makes someone else’s day a little better.

We found lots of information online about how to make moss graffiti and we read some reports indicating that it is not so easy to grow moss from scratch. We didn’t believe them completely and made our own mixture at home blending together some fresh picked moss, buttermilk and sugar. We turned some spray bottle into a Magic moss bottle and we decided to sprinkle the DEGROUTH everyday and let it flourish into new bright green nature.

After some weeks, the only survivors are the hearts! To grow moss artificially requires very specific temperature, moisture and shade conditions that our ugly wall didn’t have. Our project dried into earth graffiti! The best way to do it for non-moss-optimal surfaces is to cut pieces of living moss in the shape of your drawing and stick them on top of the mixture on the wall. If you water it often you are very likely to keep your graffiti for a long time!

This project was done by Kulturlabor Trial & Error on the framework of Stream for Change in 2012.
